The results are in from our Navigation Survey; thank you to those who responded.  We wanted to share a summary of the meaningful results.  Of the respondents:

  • 83% use GPS devices for navigation during our events; 17% do not.
  • 84% use a GPS enabled cycling computer, 11% use a Smart Phone, and 5% use a non-GPS cycling computer
  • If we offered a free navigation app, 19% would use it, 15% might (depending upon the details), 11% wouldn’t, and 55% don’t need it because they are happy with what they are currently using
  • In terms of mapping for their own rides, Ride With GPS is the most popular mapping site (54%), while 16% favor Strava 16%, 8% Garmin, and 6% each favor Map My Ride and Google Maps. 10% don’t map their rides at all.
  • 37% use live tracking with their family and friends, 37% do not.
  • 45% usually carry our cue sheets, 25% sometimes do, 28% do not, and 2% didn’t realize cue sheets were available.

Our takeaways are:

  • More respondents overall use GPS for navigation than we anticipated, though fewer use their smart phones for navigation than we had anticipated.
  • We are on the right track by offering our course files via Ride With GPS, but will explore offering them in Strava and other apps as well.
  • While 55% are happy with their current GPS navigation resources, 34% expressed interest in having access to a navigation app, so we will keep investigating this.
  • We are happy to learn that many people carry our cue sheets, but still wish more did on a regular basis. It is a great Plan B or Plan C.
