This is the bottom of a cranberry bog, where the cranberry vines grow. The vines are perennial, but need to be trimmed each spring. Cranberries are a native fruit in the Pine Barrens, the region is one of the largest producers of cranberries in the world.
While most think of bogs as being bodies of water, cranberries actually grow in the open air, exposed to sunlight, not underwater. Active cranberry bogs are only underwater 2x per year, when they are purposely flooded. Learn how bogs work at:

@whitesbogpreservation which during the 1900s, was the largest producer of cranberries in NJ.
